Clutch pull lever (throw out arm) adjustment

I just finished fixing my clutch rattle and replacing the clutch plates. I'm somewhat confused by the procedure to adjust the pull lever on the crankcase.
The factory manual states the lever has to align with the marks on the crankcase when the lever is pushed:
Someone else (can't find the thread now) mentioned the arm should align with the crankcase marks when you pull the clutch lever.
Drapheus' doesn't mention a specific position in his procedure (http://www.xjrider.com/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=2403)
My question is, do I push or pull?
Right now when I pull the clutch lever, the pointer on the pull lever is just past the second mark on the crankcase. When I push the lever as in the factory manual, it is aligned around the first mark, not between them as in the picture. The clutch lever (on the bars) is not being pulled back all the way by the spring on the pull lever, so I suspect my pull lever axle has to be rotated one tooth to the right.
