Noisy XJ 600 Whirring Sound

Hello new member from London here. Just purchased a 1995 Yamaha XJ600 with 13,000 genuine miles on the clock. When I accelerate I get a whirring sound which increases the faster I go. It sounds as if the tyres are rubbing on the mudguards but I have checked this and cant see that they are. Has anyone experienced this before ? Both wheels run relatively freely. Regards Kerry.
