65 bucks for an Air filter?

Ok, there has to be something amiss... PLEASE tell me there's another option than a 60+ dollar K&N replacement air filter for my '93 SII? Or should I just shut up and pay it, because it's worth it? I haven't had the bike long, and about 2500 miles in,
(18k on bike) am having some "dogging" issues between 4500-7500 rpm's. The forums say it could be the airbox, or the coils, so I thought the air filter would be a cheaper second step. (New fuel filter was first) I can replace both coils for less than an air filter costs, but idk if the PO ever did the air filter, so I want to replace it anyway. Every search I've tried takes me right back to the K&N.
Also, thoughts on going to the individual pod type filters: Will it affect carb adjustments? Are they even a good idea for these bikes? My next step is to contact the PO and get more details on what he did/didn't do to the bike. I know he had the carbs synced by a dealer, so I hope the filter was replaced then, too. I have a bad habit of misdiagnosing problems and replacing parts unnecessarily on my vehicles, and a 10 dollar air filter is one thing, but.......
