Fuel Pump

I got the bike running by bypassing the pump - gravity feed to carbs. Run it, warmed it up etc etc. reconnected the fuel pump run it, idled it, rev'ed it, idled it, rev'ed it etc. and then rode it about a mile and it then cut out - bowls as dry as a nun's twot in lent !!!
It is a new after market fuel pump. What am I missing? How can I test the vacuum fuel pump?
