Shimming clutch springs

Just a quick question about clutch springs. Would you ever shim yours? I have a little slippage, and figured that a cheapskate fix (or rather, just a precaution to bring up the pressure) might be to save on clutch springs by putting in a 0.25mm shim behind each bolt, then torquing it back up to textbook spec. But at the same time putting in a complete set of new clutch plates. Are there any possible risks inherent in this? If you Google shimming clutch springs, there are some horror stories out there. But in my mind I can't figure out how it could lead to gear selector fork disaster, as some people report (dirt bikers and ATVers). Thanks
