Clutch woes

Evening all,

I've been having a merry tinker on my recent 92' XJ600S buy and despite generally having success on most fronts, I've run into a bit of a bind.

Still waiting on a Haynes manual that I'm assured is in the post but using common sense and a bit of Internet searching I've nearly got her back in action.

Now despite her not having an MOT when getting her, I did make sure she ran, was rideable and the like, but since getting her taken back home, I've hit a few snags. The clutch has been really quite tight and hard to pull in, gear changes from neutral to first were exceptionally hard to make and there's been a bit if an engine rattle. Since the change of oil (which was awful) the rattle has all but gone but since slipping her into first, the clutch is now effectively inoperable and is very tight and can't change back to neutral. I've sourced a new cable and handle as the fool who had her previously had done a number on it, taking all the thread off the assembly as well as bending the adjuster.

With a spot of help from a chum I've gone through an oil change, cleaned, checked and sorted the chain, brakes and fluid but not yet delved as far as pulling her clutch assembly open and seeing what's what.

Now I'm not sure what it could be as yet though I have a number of suspicions as to the possible culpritt(s), such as an aged spring needing replacing, disc misalignment, wear on the discs and any number of other things. I feel a right nonce not having looked after draining and before replacing the oil now but chalk that one up to inexperience and being a muppet. :ponder:

Is there anything I should particularly be on the look for or some suggestions on what else to explore before I go spellunking her insides or failing that problems with immediately obvious answers?
