Starter motor works without key...

Riddle me this...
My electric start will turn over the starter motor without the ignition being turned on - starter motor only though, the bike won't start unless the ignition is on so I am assuming I have some sort of crossed/shorted wire on the starter? How would I begin to trace? Electrics are very much not my forte!
No idea if this is a new problem or a recently developed fault - I only stumbled upon it when going to start the bike without the key being in (doh!). I did add in a relay circuit switched from the rear light over the winter - but I can imagine that having an impact?
Any useful advice is warmly received!
