1999 XJ600n Fork Seals

Hi all,
I've been following the How-To on the Fork Seals from XJ Rider.
I have drained and stripped down the forks up until I need to remove the cap screw on the bottom. The How to states that 5/8" screwed rod with jam nuts should be able to hold the damper rod whilst I slacken the cap screw, however there doesn't seem to be anything for the jamming nuts to 'purchase' against? I thought were hex or splined recess that the nuts would fit into to stop it turning. But nothing...
Am I doing something wrong?
