modified gearing

I've decided to start a new thread about this, however I'm aware that there have been some done in the past - I doubt I've read them all though!
I've been toying with getting rid of the bike for something with a bit more get-up-and-go, however a lack of disposable income (and a wife) is kind of obstructing this plan
so I got to thinking, how can I make mine go quicker? the obvious ones - good service, carb balance (and possible rejet?), sort out the timing mod (as per the threads on here) and GEARING. this will allow me to get the most out of a bike (that I do actually really like) without spending silly money on Nitrous (believe me I've thought about it) or an R1.
I'm thinking of going to 15/50 gearing for a ratio of 3.3333333333(etc) - the stock is 16/48 giving a ratio of 3. Does anyone else use this gearing? this equates to a 10% increase in torque but am curious as to how this actually "feels". The majority of my riding is either commuting or town/twisties so outright speed doesnt matter (as long as I can sit at 70mph)
A 15 tooth front sprocket is easy enough to get (ebay and wemoto both stock them) but the rear is not. I've had a price to have one custom machined at £38 from bare alloy or £46 hard anodised.
Also, can anyone recommend a calculator for the chain length? or tell me what it is if you've already done it? the sprocketcalculator website says I'll need to go from 110 links to 114, however I'm sure I saw one before that said it stayed the same (ideal if your current chain only has about 100 miles on it)
cheers
Jim
