Clutch not engaging?

Hi guys, really need some help with this!
I jumped on the bike this morning for the first time in 3 weeks. It started nicely, put it into first and the bike jumped forward and stalled.
I tried again a number of times with no joy.
At first I thought it could be the side stand switch, so I put bike on the centre stand, started bike put it in first with the stand down and it cut out as expected. I put the side stand up and started bike again while on centre stand, put it into first and the bike kept running.
I pulled in the clutch and noticed the back wheel did not stop spinning, even applied some back brake but as soon as I left off the pedal the rear sped up even with clutch in. So I'm guessing the clutch isn't engaging.
any one know what I should check next or what to do?
Many thanks
Pete
