Advice on removing engine sprocket

Hallo,
Could anybody tell me how to remove engine chain sprocket? I don`t have the engine on my bike and am afraid to put it in gear in order to block it and then unscrew, not to damage gear box or something inside.
Any advice will be most appreciated.
