Wrecked Rect or something else?

Hi all
by trusty ol '93 XJ600S has been having a few issues with keeping the battery charged over the last year or so
I've replaced both battery and rectifier three times now, and she's just done it again
After the second time I figured out (all by myself) that the stock Yamaha rectifier may not be all its cracked up to be and I replaced it with a suitable suzuki alternative
It's kinda (very) expensive to be replacing rectifier and battery so frequently, and two bike shops have both said "it's a wrecked rect-ifier" (some in joke for mechanics?)
I'm a doubter now - and rather than spending the requisite several hundred dollars here - does anyone have any ideas as to what else it may be?
(Or some basic tests I can do myself - yep, I have a multimeter and some basic common sense)
