Carburetor Problems?

Well guys, prior to me cleaning the carbs of my 1982 xj550j i had 2 issues.
• bike idled rough and it was hard to keep it on when at idle.
• bike was leaking what looked like oil but smelled like gas. It was coming from the airbox area. At times inside the airbox and most of the time from a tube behind the box.
I assumed this was an carb issue so i took it apart and cleaned it. Once i reassembled the bike idled smooth and the leak seems to have stopped until i rev'd it. Then "boom" gas mixed with oil started dripping all over the place again.
Any ideas?
• i am assuming i screwed something up when rebuilding the carbs. I am considering buying a set of carb kit to replace all the parts but what your opinion before spending the money.
