back tyre

ok guys, I'm fairly new to the whole mechanics side of things the best i can do is strip a caliper down. though I was wondering what is the tickest tyre I could get on my 92 divvie? as the one that I have on it at the moment looks pretty thin for a 600cc.
can i even change the thickness of the tyre? I mean would i have to modify anything to do it? and if so where would i get it from? would i have to go to a dealer to get it? (ok i know i seem clueless
