Give our Buyer's Guide a read; it'll give you a good head start. Take the part about modifications seriously when you read it and when you look at the bike. Any mods that the previous owner has done, that aren't right, will have to be fixed or redone by you:

That being said, I do have both a stock and a heavily modified XJ and they're both great bikes.
