Hey there!
I found this forum searching for "XJ600 Clutch Rattle" and Google directed me to 1Oldman's thread:
http://www.xjrider.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... tch+rattle
I have not yet done the repair but I did clean off my old gasket while waiting for the new one in the mail. I used arazor blade and acetone and 320 grit emery metal sandpaper for the cover side where most of the adhesive was. For the engine case side gasket residue I used seafoam and a paper towel and my fingernails.
I am coming from another XJ forum as an owner of a 1982 XJ650 Maxim. Sadly she has zero compression on two cylinders and my local vintage motorcycle guy doesn't want the job. I've not yet gone as far as opening a valve cover (or anything lower) but I did carb work, starter rebuild, generator brushes, drum brakes, and brake pads on my Maxim. Everything I know about engines came from other members' posts and replies (shoutout to RickoMatic, BigFitz, Polock, Chacal!) and wrenching in my spare time.
Any members over there might know me as "the_bandit" (I was very hard pressed for creativity when I signed up over there
)
I went about three years without riding and recently got a '92 XJ600 Seca II. I'm pretty sold on Yamaha after my Maxim and the moment I saw the ad for my Seca I knew it was meant to be.
I'm waiting on a Clymer manual for the Seca, it should be here on friday.
The bike is already running pretty good. It's my everyday ride, otherwise we take the girlfriend's Jeep. I have put almost 1,000 miles on it in a couple months. It's averaging 50mpg and it does 65-70mph in 5th gear at about 5.5-6k RPM.
As I mentioned before it's got the clutch knocking that diminishes slightly when the clutch is pulled in and goes away at about 1200RPM. Someone told me it's the HI-VO chain and linked a thread about a 550 Seca. I am more inclined to think it's the same problem as 1Oldman from the thread linked above. I will check that as soon as I am able.
I also have new clutch springs in the mail. Hopefully the manual will arrive before they do so I know how much to torque the bolts.
-There's three hoses coming from the fuel tank.I know the fuel supply one, but what are the other two, breathers?
-Between carb #1 and #2 there's a T junction with hoses that come from just above the throttle shaft. The hose proceeds back and down to drip on the ground. Why has this been dripping fuel for the last two days? I've had my clutch cover off the whole time, would create some kind of pressure differential? I hope I didn't kill one of my floats or needles. I never even took the bowls off!
TLDR; Hello XJRiders! Nice to find you guys. I used to have an '82 XJ650J. Now I'm super happy with my '92 XJ600S. Maybe in five years I'll buy a '02 R6

- Other than that stuff, my To-Do list for the Seca II is as follows:
-read sticky about how to upload photos on this forum
-degrease engine
-Valve clearances/shim changes (Doing it myself this bike, last time I paid $70)
-Carb cleaning (I might drop them off for $150 ultrasonic instead of going for the hassle)
-probably all new bowl and hat screws, most are seized/stripped
-bench sync the carbs - "business card method" anyone? I usually use regular printer paper though
-Buy a vacuum gauge/sync
-buy colortune/tune it up!
-gas tank electrolysis for de-rusting. I promised myself I'd look in the tank before I bought it but I got excited and forgot. It was a two hour drive! It's nasty in there. First time I pulled the carbs, RED fuel poured out of the bowls.
