xj600s headlight fault

started up the divvy and turned on headlights, lights stayed on for 10 secs and then went out....?? now wont come back on, checked fuses, wiring, connectors, bulbs but nothing found, checked handlebar switch with voltmeter and all is ok. bike starts and runs fine, indicators, horn and brake lights all work too.....aaarrrggghhhh. 
...can anyone shed any light on wtf is happening please..... could it be igniter/cdi unit bikes a 1995 xj600s NON fuel injection..
