Rear shock absorber broke off?

Hi,
I have '97 xj600s.
Some time ago I have been taking a long ride with my girl friend. Total load was ~75kg(me) + 65kg(her) + ~7kg of cargo. That's about 150kg of load(~300 lbs). Its looks within limits for this machine.
However after returning from the ride I have noticed that the back of the motorcycle stands lower. After trying to do adjustments I it became clear that something is wrong with the rear shock absorber, so I took it off. I was a little bit shocked to see it has been broken at the top, also part of plastic behind the seat was torn off by the wheel. Also it looks like the shock is not stock but aftermarket one, with correct dimensions and fittings.
1) Any ideas why could this have happened?
2) Is it safe to ask for a good welder to weld broken shock parts together?
