Clean new chain before install?

New chains come covered in an oily grease. Some have said this is chain lube. Some have said it is simply there to keep the new chain from rusting. I'm unsure. The last new chain I installed, that I didn't clean beforehand, flung this greasy mess all over the wheel and back of the bike.
That being said; do you all clean and lube a new chain before install or pull it out of the box and stick it on?
