Starter rebuild question

As per this thread, you can see I grabbed a starter rebuild kit:
I'm stuck! I understand all the bits and where they go. It's pretty simple. BUT WAIT NOTHING IS EVER SIMPLE
How do I get this part out of the housing? I don't want to start prying or banging on it until I know what's what.
And just so I sound less ignorant next time, what is that little ring of magnets(?) called?
