Throttle issue

Tonight I drove down to the local convenient store to return a movie to Redbox. Everything on the back seems fine. I return the move and rent another. When I get back on the bike, I put it in first and give it a little throttle, but nothing happens. The throttle grip will twist but nothing was happening. I did some quick trouble shooting, and found that if I pull the throttle cable, right below where the nuts connect the two ends of the cable (at least that is what I think it is doing) the throttle works.
I was able to get the bike back to my house, and I took the housing where the throttle cables come into the grip and notice that the cables are seated properly, but the cable that comes from the front seems to have a lot of slack in it. I was able to play with the cable some and thought I got it to work properly, but when I put the housing back together, after revving once or twice the grip started doing the same thing as before.
Is there a way to make that cable shorter, or do I have to replace the entire cable? If I have to replace the entire cable, does anyone know where I can buy one? I saw a few on Ebay, but I don't know how I feel about using a used cable.
