Options for Repairing Oil Pump Drive Pin

As you all know, over time, the oil-pump drive pin will wear the hole it sits in, allowing the pin to rock in the oblong hole and causing the clutch rattle we hear when the clutch is out.

The typical repair seems to be to fit a roll pin and then fill the void in the pin with a hardened dowel. This works.
But to me, this also seems like it'll wear and cause future problems.
I've been thinking about it and I wonder if it wouldn't be better to drill the hole oversize and fit a new hardened pin into it. This would require precision machine work but would also remedy the oblong hole and the larger pin should reduce the stress on the clutch carrier.
Another option I've considered is tapping the hole and threading in a stud with some thread locker.
Do you all think either of these options are more appropriate than the roll pin idea? Also, do you know if the oil drive pin serves as an oil passage for the clutch basket?
