Odd lighting problem

Hey guys,
Recently got an XJ900 and i've found an odd problem with the lights and switches.
If i put the light switch to the parking/side light setting, the rear light comes on, but the front is off.
If i switch it to normal light setting, the front light comes on, but the rear doesnt..
If i press a brake level the brake light comes on in both instances
The high beam rocker switch also does nothing, and the dash bulb doesn't light up, but if i pull the passing/flash button, the high beam comes on and the dash light illuminates..
My first thoughts are dodgy wiring somewhere.. going to be a ball ache to track it down though..
Anyone had similar problems?
