Bike starts without fuel pump

Alright guys so yesterday I was working on the bike and I got it to start without the fuel pump. It would idle and at first I could rev it and it would stay on but after awhile it would die out given any throttle. Any ideas? I hooked the fuel pump and it won't even start. Oh and another question the pilot jets do those need to at a specific turn out?
