Clutch Cover Troubles

So I've had a leak in my bike since I bought it and finally decided to do something about it. It was leaking out of the bottom of the clutch cover gasket. I bought the gasket, took the cover off, and then replaced the gasket. I'm having some issues getting it back on correctly, and I think I may have made it worse.
According to the manual, I need to position it so that when I push it as far forward as I can, it lines up with the webbing on the cover. The problem is, when I do that, the clutch cable barely is even able to attach to it. Since it's all the way forward, there's no slack and I can' even pull the clutch lever at all. I'm assuming this means it's just always going to be disengaged.
So instead of constantly taking the cover on and off, I read that I can take the bolt out and pull it up and twist it. I tried pulling on that, but I couldn't pull it far up enough to twist it. Then all of a sudden the whole thing came out. I'm worried I pulled to hard. I can't seem to get the clutch cover off either, however I haven't pulled very hard for fear of breaking something.
This is as far down as I can push the clutch lever:

Any help would be appreciated. It's 70 today (Minnesota) and I'd really like to get out after work if I can get this thing fixed
