Expensive Noises in 6th Gear

Sorry for not posting for a while. Been having a truly awful last six months with been made redundant 4 times. As such have had to park the trusty car up and use my poor old divvy as a daily driver.
Problems with the gearbox at the moment are when in 6th gear the bike makes some of the worst noises I have ever heard from a gearbox (and I've blown a couple of 4x4 boxes in the past). it whines like a live pig been roasted, and the vibration is unbearable, the best description I could give is it sounds just like a terminal seizing wheel bearing on a car. if I pull the clutch in the noise disappears but let the clutch back out and the screech returns. There is a slight whine in all gears but nothing I would consider to be a problem.
The bike is a 92 divvy 600 uk spec (stupid oil fed carb heaters) with 35.5k on the clock (only just run in)
Any help would be appreciated, I have to do a 90 mile round trip to work on a motorway so 6th is rather important to me, plus with no car the bike is my only transport at the moment.
Regards
Bryan
