OIL LEAKING

HI guys this is my first ever post I have a 1997 Xj600 Diversion S (which is the second bike iv owned and LOVE) which I bought in October 2013, After buying the bike I noticed oil on my pants where my gear shift leaver is i thought it was due to the WD40 I sprayed on to help with the Salt over the winter. the last few weeks its got worse and worse. Now when I do my 15 mile trip to work i notice a decent size puddle of oil out of the breather pipe (so i suspect this is due the the conmen problem with the air box) BUT what is worrying me is oil seems to be coming down from the carbs but only on the left hand side carbs (the way the bike leans)the other side is dry as a bone I haven't yet had chance to get the air box open Due to the lovely British weather being (crap) could the oil in the air box be the issue and is there any danger in this ???
