valve cover gasket replacement

Hey guys, new to the forum, but I've been lurking around for some time now. I own a 92' Seca II. I love it. It has headers and exhaust. Pretty fast. (Raced a gsxr 600 and won, probably the rider but I kept up with him on the straights.) Well anyway since I've got the bike it has been creeping oil out of the valve covers, and has been leaking out from the oil filter too (not too much just drips ever now and then). Since I've been running it a lot pretty recently, I wanted to do some maintenance. Just bought some ngk CR8Es, synthetic blend 20w50, and a high flo 303 racing filter. Now I want to do the head gasket before I change those things out and tighten the chain.

My question is do I have to remove the fuel tank before I change the valve cover gasket? If so is there a write up on how to do this? Not new to working on engines ect, but I've never took off a fuel tank and don't want fuel spilling all over the place. :nervous: Any advice or comments are welcome and appreciated. I live in San Diego California so the riding season is almost year round down here, thus don't want a huge downtime :cruise:
