1997+ to 1994 - 1996 Fairing Interchangability?

I need a new front fairing for my 1996 project. I have all the stays and mounts, so I just need the plastic. The Yamaha parts fiche tells me that 1992 - 1993 used the two-piece, split down the middle. I'm pretty certain that won't fit. The 1994 - 1996 bikes have the same fairing, so we're good there. 1997 and up were different, and I like the looks of them better.
So my question is this: Do any of you know if a 1997+ fairing will fit all the mounting brackets and stays for a 1994 - 1996 bike? If now, how much retrofitting is required?
edit: In looking at pictures and the fiche, I see I'd have to change my headlight at the least.
