Helmet holder/lock?

Hey guys,
a rather small question but still something I just have to ask:
I own a xj 600 diversion -92 and I just cant get my seat to lock properly after fitting my helmet strap on to the helmet holder.
How do you guys use the helmet holder? Which part of the strap do you attach to lock it in? I have the helmet where you have the plastic insert (in other words, I dont have the "usual" two metal bits and you pull the strap through them).
