Givi Top Box Rack Modification

So i've been perusing the net, keeping my eye out for a givi top box rack, something specific, or something that I could adapt to the xj. While the soft saddle bags are handy, anytime I need to stop for a while I end up having to pull everything out, and carry the stuff in a backpack. I'm leaning towards lockable storage...
...and if anyone is selling one, speak up please.
Anyways, I've been chatting with a guy local, who's selling this setup and asking $50. I checked and new it's about $180 or more. Price is good and I can probably get a couple bucks knocked off but I was wondering...is it going to be as "simple" as dropping some brackets from the existing frame mount points on the xj and running a piece of flat stock between the rear peg or rearset exhaust hanger back up to the givi rail bar end? Would that be strong enough? I know the xj specific one has a mount point at the end of the tube frame under the plastics.
It's originally off of a CBR600 and he's going to grab some measurements for me so I can see if the rail will clear the marker lights.
