Engine Cleaning - any tips?

somewhere, and I can't find it, I've got a long plastic brush thingy with stiff nylon type bristles on the end, like a paintbrush but tougher, it has a bend in it too.
it was brilliant for cleaning the front of the engine behind the downpipes and oill cooler feeds - anybody got any tips on keeping the engine lump looking good?
