fork travel?

anybody know how far the forks compress on std xj forks? im gonna change my seals but ive got a couple of small nicks about an inch under my bottom clamp and im not sure if they will catch on the seals i cant tell myself how far they go as my bikes in bits. any help would be appreciated thanks.
