Stator or Regulator/Rectifier or ???

I'm looking for anyone that may have had a similar problem I just did. I ride a '95 seca

I was riding down the road yesterday, and after about 5-10 minutes of riding (hot day, btw... not sure if this has anything to do with it) but my bike just shut off. No pops or dramatic explosions, no warning signs either, it just turned off. So I pulled over and noticed I was getting 0 power. First thing I checked was the fuse box. I blew the 30A main fuse. So I swapped it with the spare and that blew immediately. Luckily I had a few extras in my bag, so I tried one more time with the key out of the ignition, and it still blew.

I figured I have a wire grounding out somewhere, so, trying to isolate the problem, I checked the battery first. It has good connections, full charge, and hasnt shifted around and its not touching anything it shouldn't be. Next, I pulled as much wire as I could (took all the plastic off, checked it all pretty good) and didn't find any sketchy-looking wire. So next, I followed the wires coming out of the battery to the ignition. tried unplugging that, popped in a new fuse, and it blew again. So I followed the hot wire off the coil to the regulator/rectifier, unplugged that, and bingo, no more popped fuses...

No electrical power, either. The battery has a full charge (13.5V) but when I turn the key, I get no signs of life (yes, I plugged everything but the regulator back in)

Now, I'm not very electric-savvy, and I haven't tested the stator (alternator) yet, but my question to you is have any of you had any similar problems, and what did the problem end up being? And why won't my XJ get power without a regulator?
