It Just Died While Riding

Well this was unpleasant excitement today. I was about 2 miles from work when I thought I was running out of gas... I was losing power, and the pipes turned to a deeper tone. I ran for about 3/4 of a mile till it died. Tried my reserve (which I thought I had recently fixed when I re-seated the tube) and that didn't work. So I walked to work, and got a co-worker to drive me back with a can of gas. But THAT didn't work!
So after a very expensive tow home and a few hours of work lost, I am going to take apart the whole fuel system tonight. I suspect some kind of clogging. After I got it home I tried to start it for the helluvit, and it barely tried to once. I'm thinking some fuel had gotten through in the intervening time.
So I'm still kinda new to this. What should I check? Definitely starting with the fuel system. Can I get a fuel filter at a regular auto parts store, or do I need to go to the moto shop?
