Clutch Engaging

Is there a certain place within the clutch range where the gear should catch? On my bike about 1 inch before you let the clutch all the way out is where the gear engages. All the gears function fine but, I am thinking wouldn't or shouldn't the gear grab about half way on letting the clutch out.
