oil leaking from valve cover breather hose

Hi All,
I just did my yearly maintenance :
checked valves and changed shims where needed ( 3 shims were out of spec)
cleaned my carbs as starting was difficult from time to time
cleaned air filter
balanced carbs
changed the inlet carb rubbers as they were cracked
changed oil and oil filter
took it for a little test ride...
but the bike died slowly on me only a few km further and was making hard rpm noise eventhough it was just indicating 5000rpm
managed to get it running again , came home and saw a lot of oil on the valve cover
started the bike and it seems to be spitting oil from the breather hose on the valve cover
What can be the issue here... I'm reading about compression test needed , possible rebuild of engine with new piston...
It scares me as then I'm looking at a big cost...
And to say it was running before I did maintenance
