New Starter?

Hi all
I just come back from a local garage after being convinced by a mechanic that my bike needed a new starter motor.
* This conclusion was because it was only clicking when the start button was engaged even though it was being jumped by a car.
* It came to life after giving the start motor itself a tap with a mallet.
After we decided the start motor was the issue we handed it over to a local garage and they were convinced it was just a battery issue at most but also unlikely because it seemed new (it is).
Confused I agreed to pick it up and as soon as I got home the clicking issue happened again so jumped to the conclusion the garage was wrong after all.
However, after leaving it 20 minutes, i tried to start it again and it came to life without any intervention.
So now I'm just completely confused?
Do I get a new battery (the battery is new but perhaps not very good)?
Or is it indeed the new starter motor?
