Clutch lever slack

HI guys,
After a good service of the cable and levers, I installed the clutch cable, spring and lever all as norml. Only thing is there is no tension in the lever, it's like it needs a much stronger spring. When I pull the clutch lever it just stays pulled in.
The lever & cable are nice and free. clutch pills in nicely, it just doesn't return...
I'll be looking into it in more detail but though I would ask on here if there is anything obvious I have missed.
