Vin Decoder or Serial Number Model Year?

The engine that came in my '97 isn't the original engine. It's painted silver but has the side castings and covers. I'm thinking it's a '94 or a '95 engine as in '96, they were painted black. I did get the original engine with the bike though it has a big hole in the case where the oil filler cap used to be. Any ideas on how to tell, from serial number, what year the engine came from? It's engine serial number 4DU-032384
