Shifting problems

Hello all!
I just bought a 1993 xj600 yesterday. It has 20k on it. Here's my problem:

I am having trouble shifting which I thought may be a clutch problem. Well I just checked the clutch lever and adjusted it. It had loosened up on the ride home from the night before (somehow) and was almost not pulling the clutch out at all. So that made it easier to shift when I test rode it afterwards.

Today, I rode the bike around and it was running fine. No shifting problems. Then the same thing happened after about 20 mins of riding, I would try to shift up or down and I'd have to almost kick it in to gear or jam it up to shift. Obviously this is not typical. I adjusted the clutch lever so there was almost no free play. I'd pull it all the way in and still had trouble shifting. Could this be a fluid problem? I put the bike on the kickstand and noticed that the little window on the right side of the bike (where the trans is), had no fluid showing. I'm thinking it needs new trans fluid. But could fluid really cause me not being able to shift at all?

Also, I could be way off with the fluid idea. Again, the bike was on the kickstand.

Thank you in advance to everybody on the forum. I know you will all help me out a great deal with any problems I have. :kudos:
