engine keeps cutting out/smoke from left exhaust

help need plz trying to get my bike (uk xj600n) running after carb strip and clean also did 2x new valves and shimmed it up, bike starts eventually but when warmed up dyes ,then hard to start need lots of throttle , then cuts out again after about 4 miniutes . I,m using a large fairy liguid bottle up side down as a petrol tank as I need to tune the carbs and balance them although I did bench balance them. also have the no 1 inlet manifold vacuum pipe blanked off, I,ve tried a new relay assy,cdi igniter,coils,plugs,fuel pump. now should my pump start to work by just turning on the ignition as mine don't, only works when I press the starter button. any HELP would be greatly appreciated
