Working on a 92 XJ600 Seca II

I purchased a 92 XJ600 that I am bringing back into riding condition. As I was tearing down the bike (it needs a new starter idler gear) I noticed that the crankcase on the front sprocket side has a good size part broken off by the starter where two bolts go in to hold the sprocket cover (picture below). Will the bike run ok if I don't replace the crankcase or do I need a new crankcase? I can get a used crankcase from a local shop for around $90 and if I do have to go that route how much work would be involved in switching everything over to the new case? The only thing the shop has is just the lower crankcase so I would have to switch over the heads and all the top end parts and everything in the crankcase. FYI i'm only a half ass mechanic with very little experience on motorcycles, would I be in over my head? Thanks in advance for all your help!
