Engine won't run

So I just picked up my 1992 XJ600 SD the other day. It has sat for a couple years without being run. I did the usual oil change, gas dumped and replaced, battery fully charged, and cleaned out the carbs (they were really filthy). The engine turns over but won't start. I can only get it to run when I put gas directly into the carbs. It will run for a few seconds and then die. I checked out the fuel system and its working. The fuel pump diaphragm is fine and it is pumping fuel through the hose into the carbs. The bike is missing the crank case number 1 (name from diagram in the manual) I'm not sure if this could be related. Also the oil light comes on when I try to crank it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
