Chain debris around the sprocket on a new to me engine

I installed the new engine I bought. When I went to attach the chain, the sprocket cover was full of grease and debris. little orings were in the grease. I'm guessing these are from a broken chain. From reading other posts I know that a broken chain can create problems. I spun the sprocket and it doesn't seem bent. Anything else I should check before I get back on the road?
