Speedometer gear delete?

Hello everyone, I recently purchased a sad excuse of a Seca II. $225 and I trailered it home. It was apparently a donor bike at a local bike shop (ie tons of little stupid parts missing). One of the parts missing is the speedometer gear that fills in the gap on the front axle. Without that part my wheel slides back and forth. Is there a safe way to fill in that gap without the speedo gear? Something like spacers or something along those lines? Thank you in advance!
