- As you know, I recently bought a '92 XJ from Sasquatch that was in need of some repair. He had hit a large pothole with it, and thought he broke some welds on the frame. After I got it, it turned out that the frame was fine; the damage was to the swingarm and undertail. The undertail was broken from the wheel bottoming out on it so hard. On the swing arm, the lower shock mount had actually ripped the steel at the welds and was starting to peel back off the swing arm. That was a big pothole! ...or the last straw after several potholes over the years, more likely.
Swing Arm Pothole Damage

- Capriotti613 has been selling some parts on here for awhile, so I bought a replacement swing arm from him. I had planned to fix it, but I damaged it a bit more trying to remove the bearings, so I decided I might as well replace it since there was one available at a good price. It came in the mail this morning, and I immediately noticed that it looked different...in a better way. The shock mount is attached differently. It's a U-shape that wraps around the swing arm crossbar, instead of an L-shape sitting on top and behind. It's much better, and definitely stronger.
- After doing a little digging, I found Yamaha had updated it in 1994.
For 1992-1993, the part number is: 4BP-22110-00-WL
For 1994-2002, the part number is: 4BP-22110-01-WL (also, the parts catalogs begin to call it "Rear Arm" in '94)
- In Yamaha part numbers, the last two sections separated by dashes are revision and color (if applicable). The change from 00 to 01 indicates the same part, but in an updated version.
- The shock mount is the only difference I see. I wonder what made them change it. I wonder if there were problems with it the first year or so. I've never seen this happen before. Anyway about it, it's definitely a good improvement, and I thought it was interesting enough to share.
