testing stator or rectifier

I have a question can you test your stator or rectifier by taking off the negative or power cable to the battery to see if the bike turns off I know it works with cars. Reason why is last Sat my bike shut down on the back from out of town took battery out and it was very hot, tried to push start but no success then tryed to jump start bike started up by when cables came off bike shut down. Any suggestions
