Cam timing marks

I just bought a '02 xj 600. I have spark, fuel in the carbs but it will barely hiccup. Starting to thinking the cam timing is off. Is there an obvious way to tell the the cams are in right... to start with is the exhaust cam in the exhaust side and the intake in the intake side? The manual I have is pretty vague on the timing marks to boys. Any pics or links to show these?
