While I was researching top boxes, I would occasionally come across a post about the boxes flying off after hitting a pothole, or train tracks and such. Of course there were all kinds of fixes online but about the best I saw was one from an FJR forum found here (scroll down to post#40) The $3 remedy to flying GIVI trunks
I think it took me longer to walk to the shop and grab my drill then it did to do the entire mod...
Here's what I had lying around the shop
5/16 clevis pin 1.5" length
hitch pin
2 bonded washers, also 5/16
5/16 ID copper space 0.5" length
I drilled the hole (5/16 bit) from underneath the rack, up through the box while it was locked in place. When I looked under the rack, there was a punchout for what I assume is running wires for a brake light.
From underneath...the hitch pin will only slide through the clevis pin when the box is securely latched, it's a nice tight fit. This pulls the bonded washer inside the box down creating a seal.
Was it really necessary? Who knows  ? But it's a bit of added security and piece of mind, and the best part is, the box is still really quick and easy to remove.
